Drew University men’s golf kicked off their inaugural season at one of Division III golf’s most prestigious tournaments over the weekend of September 16th and 17th in Middlebury, VT. In a highly competitive field of 22 teams, the Rangers placed placed 19th with a team score of 637 at the Middlebury Duke Nelson Invitational.
Ryan Fitzsimmons (‘21) was Drew’s top performer for the weekend shooting a five-over 76 on Saturday and a 78 on Sunday for a 36 hole total of 154. He finished tied for 55th place overall. Fitzsimmons’ performance also earned him Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week honor for men’s golf.
Teammate Matthew Rizzo (‘21) had a two-day score of 157, carding a 79 on Saturday and 78 on Sunday for his first tournament. Fellow freshman Michael Bliss (‘21) shot an 81 on Saturday and 80 on Sunday tallying a score of 161 for the weekend. Susquehanna transfer Anthony Castronova (‘20) recorded an 83 and 82 for a total of 165 for the event. Kushal Renjen (‘21) completed the five man team with a pair of 86s for a card of 172.
The Rangers shot a team score of 319 to sit in 19th place on Saturday. Drew went out to card a 318 on Sunday to lock up their 19th place finish. The team sank a total of eleven birdies, two coming from Fitzsimmons.
Following a week off the Rangers men’s golf team returns to action the weekend on September 30th and October 1st at the Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic in Abbottstown, MD.
