The Drew University men’s and women’s tennis teams combined for a complete victory over Susquehanna University on Sunday, April 23. The men defeated the River Hawks with a score of 7-2, while the women increased their winning streak to 13, winning with a score of 8-1.
On the men’s side, the Rangers won virtually every singles match apart from the number five spot. Salikh Gilmutdinov (’18), Vineet Vemulapally (’19), Will Morrison (’19) and Geoffrey Diehl (’20) conquered the number one through the number four singles spots respectively, while Kevin Shulca (’19) took the number six spot. Vemulapally and Diehl also teamed up to win against the number one doubles spot, and Gilmutdinov and Morrison did the same against the number two spot. The men now improve to a record of 15-3 overall, and 4-2 in the Landmark Conference.
The women displayed an incredible performance as well, as Ashley Camel (’20), Ty Ty Witten (’19) and Jessica Cheng (’17) emerged victorious against the first through third singles spots respectively, while Maria Navas Espinal (’20) took the number four spot, and Megan Jarvis (’17) took the number six spot. The Rangers went undefeated in doubles play, as Camel and Witten won against the number one spot, Cheng and Navas Espinal against the number two spot, and Cristina Riccio (’20) and Christina Christodoulou (’20) won against the number three spot
The women top the Landmark Conference charts, as they remain undefeated with a record of 6-0. Both teams have now qualified for the Landmark Conference semifinals, with the men playing on May 2, and the women on May 3. Both teams have one last Landmark Conference match before they head to the Landmark Conference Championships, as they face-off against Juniata College tomorrow at 1 p.m.
