On Feb. 21, the Drew University women’s lacrosse team fell short in their season opener at Montclair State with a score of 15-4. Drew trailed the Red Hawks 3-0 at the ten-minute mark, but Co-Captain Kelly Dwyer (’17) cut the lead with the Rangers’ first goal of 2017.
Montclair State then launched a comeback, closing out the first half with a 7-1 lead. Midfielder Nicole Kinney (’18) garnered the Rangers two goals on free position shots. She also took three shots to cause a turnover and a draw control. Kinney commented on the first game of the season, “you live, you learn, you practice and you get better.”
Attacker and Co-Captain Anna Fiorini (’17) scored her first goal of the season in the closing minutes of the game after a straight charge to goal with an assist from Allie DiDario (’20). DiDario concluded her collegiate debut with a team-high of five ground balls; she also collected two draws and caused two turnovers.
Goalkeeper Isabella Kudas (’20) opened her collegiate career in the second half of the game and made six saves. Kudas commented on her first ever college game saying, “it was fun and exciting to finally play with my team and I look forward to the rest of the season.” The Rangers were at a disadvantage in ground balls and draw controls. They were also outshot by the Red Hawks 30-12.
Drew looks to improve their record in their first home opener on Monday, Feb. 27 at 4:30pm against DeSales University.The following week the team will be in Flordia for spring break.
