The Korn Gallery’s newest exhibit is the group exhibition PRIMARY. Curated by one of Drew’s assistant professors, Jason Karolak, the exhibition features pieces from 12 artists: Lee Arnold, Robert Burnier, Torkwase Dyson, Gabriele Evertz, Beverly Fishman, Clare Grill, Adam Henry, Gina Hunt, John Opera, Armita Raafat, Cary Smith and Arjan Zazueta.
One artist, Lee Arnold, is an associate professor here at Drew University. Besides teaching digital art classes, he also is a part of the New York Semester on Contemporary Art and was the most recent professor charged with leading the London Semester. Arnold has previously been featured in screenings and exhibits, such as New York City’s Exit Art, Eyebeam and Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia and SIGGRAPH in Los Angeles. In PRIMARY, a monitor display presents a collection of videos, titled Stereograph (2017), that examine “how light functions perceptually and philosophically” and speak “to the spheres of science and the natural world.”
One of the more interesting pieces is Armita Raafat’s three-dimensional piece, which spans 50 by 36 inches on a corner wall and is made of resin, fabric, paint, and mirror. It is an organic shaped sculpture, colored different shades of blue that look holographic. Untitled (2017) references “Islamic architecture and design, ornament and repetition… and geometric abstraction.”
PRIMARY is on display until April 25, Tuesdays through Fridays from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. The opening reception is April 13 from 5 to 7 p.m.
