Drew’s women’s basketball team dropped their final game of the season against Juniata College, suffering a 83-55 defeat. This matchup snapped Drew’s three-game winning streak against the Eagles.
Juniata took a commanding lead early on, scoring 14 points before Haley Scheuer (‘18) sank a trey with 53 seconds left in the first period. The Rangers began to close the deficit with help from Hailey Stine (‘19) who scored a layup early on in the second quarter. The Rangers were able to rally again in the third quarter, when Julia Ramos (‘20) went on a five point scoring spurt to begin to close the deficit once again. Despite the deficit, Drew kept fighting and they were able to score 14 of the last 16 points scored in the game.
Ramos led the team with 19 points along with collecting five steals throughout the game. Stine finished with eight points, and Michaela Keegan (‘18) had 11 points, four steals and three assists in her final game. The Rangers had their most victorious season since their 2014-2015 campaign with 12 wins.
The men’s basketball team was also on the road for their final two games of the season; they played at Juniata for their last regular season game before traveling to Moravian for the first round of conference championships.
The Rangers dropped their contest against Juniata 73-64 to put them third in conference rankings. With the win, Juniata secured the No. 1 seed. The Eagles began with a 12-4 lead and was up 20-10 before Yonathan Napoleon (‘18) made a layup to start a 15-4 scoring run for the Rangers.
The Rangers were able to rally several more times throughout the game with help of Darius Reiter (‘19) making a free throw and Dan Roibal (‘19) hitting a layup. Napoleon led the team with 20 points and nine rebounds, along with three assists. Mike Boice (‘20) scored 10 points while Riley Collins (‘20) added seven points to the tally.
The Rangers then traveled to Moravian for the first round of Landmark Conference playoffs, making their first appearance in three seasons. The Rangers dropped a heartbreaker to the Greyhounds, with Napoleon hitting a jumper with only four seconds left in the game to send it into overtime. Despite the rally, the Rangers were unable to prevail and dropped the game 96-91.
With the loss, the Rangers must wait to see if they have been selected for the Eastern College Athletic Conference playoffs to continue their postseason.
