The Drew women’s soccer team has their fall 2017 campaign well underway, currently boasting a 2-1 record after their first week.
Drew opened their season with the Cyclones Kickoff Classic hosted by Centenary University. Their opening match was against the Coast Guard Academy. The Rangers won the matchup 1-0 with Sarah Racine (‘21) scoring the lone goal and the first goal of her collegiate career. Madison Dudziec (‘21) played the first half in goal, earning the victory and notching her first career shutout. The Rangers dominated offensively, outshooting their opponent 12-8 and not allowing any shots in the second half.
In their following game, Drew was unable to continue the momentum they found in their first game, dropping the contest against Centenary University 1-2 in overtime. Centenary scored first, but the Rangers were able to answer in the second half, with Alex Gilgorri (‘19) scoring her first goal in the Forest. This forced the game into overtime, when early in the extra period the Cyclones were able to capitalize on a penalty kick and slide the ball past Dudziec. This ended the period and won the game for Centenary.
The Rangers regained their momentum in their home opener against Manhattanville College, winning the contest 2-0 following two early goals. Gilgorri scored her second goal of the season, notching the first point of the game just 19 minutes into the game. Meghan McDermott (‘19) added to the tally shortly after, bringing the score to 2-0 by halftime. Defensively, the Rangers dominated as well, allowing only one shot on goal which was saved by Brielle Castanheira (‘19) as she earned her first career shutout.
The Rangers are back in action this weekend with two home games as a part of Fall Fest. On Saturday, they are playing Kean University at 1 p.m., followed by a game Sunday at 2 p.m. against Ramapo College.
