The 2017-18 Drew University athletic season kicked off this weekend, as the Rangers hosted the 34th annual Drew Fall Festival at Ranger Stadium, which showcased the men’s soccer team as well as the field hockey team.
On Friday, September 1, the Drew University field hockey team endured a loss of 6-1 against the #20 Herons of William Smith College. The Rangers held off the Herons early on in the game to keep the match scoreless for much of the first half, and Madi Sheetz (’18), scored the lone goal in favor of the Rangers.
In their second match of the season, the Rangers faced off against Lebanon Valley College, unfortunately enduring another loss (6-0). Despite the loss, goalkeeper Ryann Callaghan (’19) showed tremendous persistence, as she stopped 17 shots made by the Dutchmen, making her save percentage over 70 percent, setting the tone for her to build on last season’s record-breaking performance.
The Rangers concluded their three-game season opener, as they fell (7-0) against Widener University on Wednesday. Camryn Koch (’21) and Mackenzie Hascup (’20) both made defensive saves, and Callaghan made an impressive 12 saves, including stopping a penalty stroke.
The Rangers hit the road after playing three straight matches at home, to face-off against Keuka College this Saturday, September 9.
