Men’s lacrosse wins the Madison Cup

The Drew University men’s lacrosse team clinched the Madison Cup after achieving a 12-6 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson University on Wednesday, March 29, and evening their overall season record to 4-4.

FDU scored the opening goal early on, but Drew responded with a four-goal streak within the following 15 minutes to secure their victory.

Midfielder Joe Palmieri (’18) opened up the scoring streak for the Rangers and also contributed a pair of assists and had seven wins on the face off. Midfielder Kevin Goettlich (’20) and attacker Jack Crowley (’18) both scored hat tricks. Goettlich’s season total stands at 13 and Crowley leads the team in goals with a total of 15 scored. Attacker Ryan D’Alessandro (’19) netted two goals to increase his season total to 11. Midfielder Tom Cotroneo (’17), defender Michael Lloyd (’17) and Kyle MacDonnell (’20) each contributed a goal to the Rangers victory. MacDonnell also scooped a team high four ground balls and added two assists for his career high three points.

FDU had a total of 48 shots and goalkeeper Teddy Sweeney made 19 saves throughout the game, raising his total saves over the last two games to 39 and improving to 4-2 in his net season.

Drew made 20 clears out of their 25 attempts and scooped 31 ground balls to the Devil’s 30. Out of the 19 penalties called, Drew went 0 for 9 on the man up opportunity while FDU went 1 of 10.

The Rangers looks to improve their record on Saturday, April 1, when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan.
