The Drew University baseball team started their Spring 2017 season in a spectacular fashion, winning their first game against Stevens Institute of Technology 10-0, beating Stevens for the first time since 2009.
This is the first time since 2013 that they have begun their season with a win.The Rangers began the game by scoring two runs in the first inning and continued to dominate throughout the game. Mike Miraglia (’17) set the pace for the Rangers, scoring a home run in the first inning, with teammate Ryan Sabbag (’18) also scoring a run.
Miraglia scored again in the sixth inning, capitalizing on a single by Zach Lipshitz (’19) taken with the bases loaded. Later in the inning, Jayson Mitch (’19) and Lipshitz were also able to take advantage of this opportunity once again, each of them scoring a run off a double hit by Marc Cohen (’17).
Sabbag was able to notch another run in the game, as he scored in the fourth inning off a walk earned by Anthony Tagliaferro (’20). Sabbag was not the only player who scored twice in the game; later on Jonathan Rodrigues (’17) scored in both the second and fifth innings, contributing to the substantial victory.Drew continued their winning streak on Thursday, Feb. 23 against Lehman College in a game shortened by darkness. Pete Violante (‘20) turned in an impressive performance, allowing only run through 6.2 innings of pitchings. The rookie threw five strikeouts, while allowing only two walks and six hits throughout the game.
Anthony Tagliaferro (‘20) turned in his first performance as designated hitter, batting 2-for-4, scoring a run in the process.The Rangers were able to come back from a 1-0 deficit in the fourth to score two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.
The Rangers will be back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 1 at 3 p.m. as they take on William Paterson University in their last game before their trip to Florida for spring break.
