The smell of apple-cider donuts, the sight of pumpkin painting and the sounds of people exuberantly playing cornhole, all coming from the Hoyt-Asbury lawn on Wednesday afternoon, could only mean one thing: HoytBuryFest!
A complex-wide program, hosted and planned by the Resident Advisors and Resident Directors of Hoyt and Asbury, HoytBury fest was an excellent way to jump into fall and spend some time together as a community. It also provided the perfect opportunity to reflect together on the first half of semester that has already flown by in no time. With all manner of activities from pie-eating contests to Fall-themed coloring-in (a favourite way to destress) to corn hole to, of course, the inevitably delicious fall-themed snacks that were served (think popcorn and donuts), there really was something for everyone.
Jordan Burnett (’19), who was part of the team who worked tirelessly to host this event for the Drew community, said that their main goal was to create a space to relax after the hectic start to the semester. When looking around, it is obvious to see that students are doing exactly that; a few people clustered around the pumpkin painting tables, decorating squashes in brilliant shades and another group gathered by the volleyball net, prepping for a friendly match.
Many students originally just popping in for free food and the promise of Drew Zoo points, all agreed that they were glad they had come. Andrew Rupkey (’18) said that it was fun to stop by between classes, and he was having a great time, echoing the general consensus of those in attendance.
Were this a bigger school, such a popular event could be an intimidating environment, but Abigail Mullen (’20) noted the friendly and welcoming atmosphere, “It’s such a great way to meet people, and get involved in the community.” Her sentiment seems to be a popular one, as everywhere there are students from all four years mingling together.
It would be amiss to not point out the excellent start to fall this event provided like the excellently well themed activities, getting those present even more excited for the changing of the leaves, Pumpkin Spice everything and sweater weather that we all know fall will bring
