This week, the Drew University women’s soccer team lost to both of their opponents. Their overall season record stands at 6-10-1 and their conference record is 1-5-0. The Rangers will not advance to conference playoffs this season.
On October 21, Drew fell 6-1 against Catholic. The game was scoreless until for the first 35 minutes of play, and a converted penalty kick by the Cardinals gave them the 2-0 edge at the half. Catholic’s lead doubled when they scored two goals within less than a minute at the 61-minute mark. Three minutes later, Leah Dentale (’21) responded with a goal for Drew, marking her fourth of the season. She leads the Rangers with 14 points. A minute after Dentale’s strike, Catholic scored another before adding a sixth in the final minutes of the game.
Goalkeeper Madison Dudziec (’21) made four saves before being relieved by Brielle Castanheira (’19), who recorded two saves.
On October 24, the Rangers concluded non-conference play with a 2-0 loss against FDU-Florham. Early in the game, Drew had a series of good scoring opportunities, but FDU’s goalie blocked the Rangers’ shots. At the 18-minute mark, the Devils fired a shot past Dudziec to put FDU up. In the second half, Drew applied more offensive pressure, but could not convert a play through the FDU defense and the Devils scored again during minute 68 off of a direct kick 30 yards out.
Despite outshooting FDU at a 15-9 margin, Drew could not steal the win. Alex Gilgorri (’19) led the Rangers with six shots during the game. Castanheira made one save in goal during the second half of play.
The Rangers conclude their 2017 season on Saturday, October 28 at 1 p.m. when Goucher travels to Ranger Stadium. This matchup will be the final game of the careers of Drew’s four seniors and they will be honoring them with a Senior Day celebration before the game.
