The Drew University women’s lacrosse team went undefeated in Florida last week. Their 2-0 record over spring break improved their season record to 4-1 with a four game winning streak.
The Rangers opened their Floridian run with a tight 12-10 victory over Johnson & Wales University on Monday, March 6. Midfielder Morgan Mason (’17) netted two goals from her nine shots. She also garnered three assists in the game. Mason’s first goal got Drew on the board after an early goal from JWU.
Allie DiDario (’20) also scored two goals, one of which was assisted by midfielder Jenna Morelli (’20). Sage Johnson (’18) got on the board early in the second half with an assist from Mason. Attackers Theresa Shafron (’17), Kelly Dwyer (’17) and midfielder Nicole Kinney (’18) each contributed to the score sheet and solidified the Rangers’ victory. Goalie Gianna Minogue (’17) continued her double-digit save streak with 11 total saves.
Despite their victory, Drew was outshot 25-23 and 21-18 on goal. The Rangers maintained possession on most restarts, earning 12 out of 17 restarts.To further improve their record, on Wednesday, March 8, Drew beat Mount Ida College with a convincing score of 14-3. With her first goal just 38 seconds into the game, Shafron earned a hat trick and got an assist, she now leads the team with 13 goals over the last four games. Anna Fiorini (’17) helped the Rangers take an early lead with two assists. DiDario netted her first collegiate hat trick, she has scored in each of the last four games. Mason, Dwyer and Morelli each added two goals to the Rangers’ victory. Johnson and midfielder Mia Campanale (’19) both scored in the second half. DiDario and Kinney each captured six ground balls to lead the team for ground balls.
Mason controlled a game-high four draws and Johnson forced four caused turnovers.Drew tallied the sixth highest groundball count for a single game in the program’s history at 36. The Rangers dominated draws 12-4 and ground balls 36-23. The Rangers continued their dominance on the field with a 19-3 victory against SUNY Canton on March 16 in their first game back from Florida. This victory pushed their winning streak to five games, the first time this has happened since 2014. This is the best start to their season since 2008.
Mason netted six goals, adding to an already impressive season. Kinney set a career high five points in the game, tying her career-high four goals. Shafron netted a hat trick, scoring multiple goals for the fifth game in a row this season, bringing her total goals for the season to 16. Johnson also added a hat trick in the game, bringing her season total to 11 goals.The team will travel to Stockon University tomorrow for a game at 1 p.m before returning home next Wednesday for a game against FDU.
